Abstract

Periodontal disease is a pathological condition that involves inflammation of the tooth supporting structures. Accumulated lines of evidence suggest that hyperimmune responses to periodontal bacteria result in the destruction of periodontal connective tissue and alveolar bone. In this review, we discuss several aspects of the immune-inflamatory host response that uitimately results in loss of alveolar bone and stimulates osteoclastogenesis.
